AWANA is a club for boys and girls, ages 3 through grade six. It is organized with the purpose of reaching boys and girls for Christ. Our program runs from September to May on Thursday evenings. Next September, we will be starting our 12th year of AWANA at OCBC. We look forward to teaching your children about our Lord and helping them to learn about the Bible, missions, and reaching others for Christ.

Your child will bring home an entrance booklet from their club if they are new or have moved up from another club. This is the first plateau of achievement at which every new clubber starts. Please read through this booklet to familiarize yourself with the AWANA program. The booklet briefly explains the program and the award system. As part of the AWANA program, children are expected to do memory work every week at home. When they have passed the entrance booklet, they will have earned the right to wear the AWANA uniform and purchase their First Handbook which they will use all year. Each clubber earns awards to display on their uniform as they pass their book.
Clubbers start by arriving, checking in, and then gathering in the large meeting room for the Opening Flag Ceremony. After this, they rotate with their groups between three sections each night: Handbook Time, Council Time, and Game Time.
During Handbook Time, your child will be reciting sections of their handbook, which they have prepared at home. Help from a parent can mean a lot in aiding your child in completing their book, especially for the Sparks and Cubbies. The book's sections must be passed in order. The child is allowed two "helps" per section. Children may prepare more than one section each night. The children work through their handbooks at their own pace. (Cubbies may work through the book at the same pace. Please check with your Cubbie leader)
Counsil time consists of songs, sharing, and a message.
Game Time will be held in the large meeting room. Each group is divided into team colors and earns points for their team. Game Time is a great time to practice good sportsmanship and a chance to expend energy and have FUN! In an effort to keep everyone safe, please have your child wear only sneakers or some other rubber soled shoes that fully cover their feet. Accidents can happen when sandals, dress shoes, or open backed shoes are worn.
During the evening, points have been awarded to the clubbers for bringing their Bible, being on time, wearing their uniform, passing sections, bringing visitors, and game time activities. Scores are added up and the winning team for the night is announced and "rewarded" at the end of the evening. Awards are also presented at this time to the clubbers who have earned them.
Throughout the AWANA year, there will also be contests, special theme nights, and special club activities.
We collect $.25 per child registration fees each AWANA evening at check in to help offset the expenses of running the club.
If you have questions, call the church at 503-655-3009 and we will have
an AWANA leader contact you.
